Fraud Prevention

When people talk about fraud, most think of stolen credit cards first. That is a small slice of it. It is just as much about taken-over customer accounts, invented identities, abused return rights, forged invoices and employees helping themselves.

Behind it you rarely find lone offenders with too much time, but networks with a division of labour. They scout out your procedures and test their scams on a small scale long before they strike at scale. Answering that with one more piece of software moves the gap, it does not close it.

Anti-Financial Crime

Money laundering and fraud are two names for the same movement: money is meant to change hands without anyone looking too closely. In many houses two departments handle this and know nothing of each other. That seam is exactly where the offenders work.

And even without an inspection from outside, the topic is an expensive nuisance: duplicate work on the same cases, blocked accounts of good customers, queries from banks and partners that cost time. Set it up properly and you save at both ends.

Payments

Payment is the method you use to earn money. And the same method through which you can lose it. At the front, in the checkout, every unnecessary hurdle costs revenue that nobody ever books. At the back, defaults, returns and dunning runs cost money that was never planned for.

The other two topics feed straight into this one: every fraud rule and every money laundering check helps decide who gets to pay in the end and who does not. That is why the three belong together, and why payment cannot sensibly be optimised on its own.

Why these belong together

One and the same event looks completely different in three departments. The fraud team reports more suspicious cases than usual. Anti-money-laundering finds a striking cluster of accounts. And in payments conversion drops while customer enquiries go up at the same time.

Three observations, three tickets, three explanations. Each department is right on its own, and none of them sees that it is the same cause. Weeks pass before someone lays the three pictures side by side. During that time the damage keeps running.

That is exactly where the cost arises: cases checked twice, contradictory rules, good customers rejected on one side and offenders let through on the other. Prevention, by contrast, costs a fraction of a single successful case, provided it starts in the right place.

And then there is AI

The topic that is currently accelerating everything else.

Fraud has always been a calculation: what does an attempt cost, and what does it bring in? That calculation has flipped. An attack costs almost nothing today, so every target and every amount is worth it. What used to be done one at a time and laboriously now runs automatically against hundreds of companies at once, learning as it goes.

At the same time the signs by which people used to recognise fraud are disappearing. A familiar voice on the phone, a known face in a video call, a flawless email from the boss: none of it is proof any more. On the defence side the same technology helps, but only if you know what it can do and where it reliably gets things wrong.

Why this changes every single scam →

Your situation is not everyone else's

That is why there is no standard package, but always the same start: an intro call, scoping, then a fit that suits you.

Method

A structured approach

Fixed criteria along which a complete picture emerges. Not the random slice that happens to be on someone's mind.

Experience

Learned in the engine room

Worked hands-on, built, repaired, optimised and led as well. In mid-sized companies as in groups, nationally and internationally.

Result

A tailored solution

Method plus experience gives you a fit that suits your house. And one your own people can carry on afterwards.

Digital self-defence

The human side of the same task, in companies as much as in schools.

Technology and procedures catch a lot, but not everything. At some point a human being always decides, and that is exactly where attackers aim. Once you know a scam, you do not fall for it again and you look twice. That attentiveness can be taught, in a company just as much as in a classroom or at the kitchen table.

For pupils it is about finding their way in a world where paying, applying for jobs and looking for a flat happen online. For parents and teachers it is about being able to ask the right questions. For workforces it is about knowing their own exposure. Every group gets its own examples and its own language.

It is about you, from the first conversation

Of course I make a living from engagements. That is exactly why I will also tell you when you do not need one. Getting started costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

You talk

What is on your mind, where does it hurt, what have you already tried? A phone call is usually enough to begin with. If it needs more, we take more time.

I place it

Often it is possible to name what is really going on during the conversation itself. You get an honest assessment, including when I am not the right person.

You decide

Only then comes a proposal: modular, tailored to your goals and your budget. Only what is actually needed.

And that is how it stays. During an engagement too, the work follows your situation and not a standard procedure. You decide how deep we go and when we stop.
